Hartford News & Notes
Right handed pitcher, John Burke assumed the fifth spot in the Hartford rotation this week and made his major league debut against Seattle yesterday. Burke pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits in Hartford's 2-1 loss. Of the young arm's debut, Manager Jeremy Chrabascz had this to say, "It was an extremely heartbreaking loss today. The kid had good stuff and gave us all he had. Unfortunately, we gave him diddly in terms of run support. Hopefully we can pick him up some wins in the near future because we plan on having him as part of our organization for a long time." Burke had this to say, "I was just happy to be here and do my part. We'll win next time."
Hartford ace Greg Maddux dueled with Seattle hurler Randy Johnson today and neither allowed a run as Hartford prevailed 1-0 with Kurt Abbott's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. Maddux got a no decision in pitching his 8 scoreless innings, striking out 5 and walking none. Reliever Rick Huisman picked up the win pitching a scoreless 9th and 10th inning, allowing a single hit, striking out 2 and walking none. Huisman three 22 of his 33 pitches for strikes! Of the win, Huisman had this to say, "It's truly a shame anyone has to win a game like this but I am glad it was us." Meanwhile, Manager Chrabascz added, "This was a pitching duel...the ultimate of all pitching duels. Baseball fans couldn't have asked for a tighter game. This truly had a playoff feel to it. Johnson had his usual stuff and we were fortunate to hang on and win in the extra frame. The hometown fans here really observed a jewel.
IN OTHER NEWS...
The Whalers were happy to recently acquire Tom Brunansky, Chris Sabo, Todd Benzinger, Rick Trlicek, Ron Darling and Dan Davis. We feel we have added some much needed depth.
Manager Chrabascz has also announced an immediate change in batting order to boost production. "It was clear Ken (Griffey, Jr.) wasn't happy as he was not producing batting cleanup. We've made some changes. We'll see what happens."
