PRESS RELEASE: Morning, Saturday, August 9th
The Oakland franchise has been moved to Hartford, Connecticut and will be referred to as the Whalers from here on in. The Whalers will play at downtown Travellers Park, a picturesque brick park (ala Camden Yards) with a retractable roof (ala Skydome).
TRANSACTIONS
The Whalers released four pitchers in their first day of existence: J. Hensiek, E. Richter, J. Frascatore and J. Brantley.
The Whalers will be signing free agent contracts with the following four free-agent acquisitions: Butch Henry, Stan Belinda, Tony Fossas and Lee Smith.
The above transactions have been pre-approved by the league office and rosters will reflect them accordingly...soon.
RUMORS
Hartford is eagerly seeking out and is VERY interested in SS Nomar Garciaparra of Montreal, OF Reggie Jefferson of Kansas City, and CF Deion Sanders of Baltimore.
Hartford is eagerly trying to unload C Terry Steinbach, LF Al Martin, SS Kurt Abbott and left-handed pitcher Buddy Groom.
The Whalers are essentially in need of some defense in the outfield and some pop in their lineup (speed wouldn't hurt either, though).
