Today DC United completed a blockbuster, six-player trade with the Ponxatawney Groundhogs. The deal sent pitcher Roger Clemens, second baseman Roberto Alomar, and center fielder Curtis Goodwin to DC. In return Ponxatawney got pitchers Pedro Martinez, Ricky Batallico, and Rick Aguilera. The trade was completed shortly after Ponxatawney received second baseman Tony Bautista in a trade with the Tampa Bay White Sox.
"This is a big step in the future of DC United," stated DC United owner Sean Corwin, "I'm looking forward to great things from the team now." The deal filled key voids in the DC lineup - a weak second base and a lack of speed in the outfield. DC United hopes that the void left by Batallico as closer can be made up by Steve Cooke, who currently is tied for the league lead (with Batallico) with an ERA of 0.00.
This first trade in DC United history comes shortly after the voided trade with the Tampa Bay White Sox. In a related story, DC United took first baseman Hal Morris, catcher Darren Fletcher, and Rick Aguilera off the DL, and called up Taylor Sayles from AAA. DC also sent Tom Sherid, Art Maupin, Rick Honeycutt, and Mark Acre down to AAA.
