PVBL: Brooklyn Flaming Skulls
Major Trade for Brooklyn

August 2, 1997

The Brooklyn Flaming Skulls made a trade today that will help them a lot this year but might hurt 3 years down the road. They send Todd Hollandsworth, Andy Benes and a player to be named later to Tuscon for Orlando Miller, Aurthor Rhodes and Brady Anderson. Anderson will be off of the D.L. in a week and will go to Brooklyn when he is traded. The player to be named later is Andy Pettitte who is out for the season. Anderson will give the Skulls another power hitter (99 power) as well as a true leadoff hitter. Miller is a better SS than the current one (Noberto Martin) and will start. Rhodes will be placed into the rotation, he is 7-4 with a 3.31era. Hollandsworth was having a great year, batting .320 with 13hr and 62 rbi and 74r but isn't as good as Anderson when he is healthy (right now). Benes has been very inconsistant this year but still has solid numbers (6-2 3.99). Here is a look at Brooklyn's big hitters:
Brady Anderson 99PH,
Bernie Williams 81PH 15hr 84R 30sb,
Jeff Bagwell 81PH 32hr 92rbi 79R,
Manny Ramirez 90PH 30hr 93rbi,
Andres Galarraga 99PH 18hr (spent a lot of time on the D.L.)
Mike Stanley 23hr 70rbi

Now to today's games. The Skulls swept both games of todays double header. They won the first game 12-0 over Montreal behind 7 3-hit 5-k innings by Juan Guzman (11-7 2.76) Jeff Bagwell had 4 hits and Andres Galarraga hit a homer and drove in 4 in the win.

David Cone started game 1 but got a no-decission while striking out 8 in 6.2 innings. The Skulls were trailing 5-3 in the 7th when Barney Cavaretta came in and he saved the game with 3.2 shutout innings. The Skulls scored one in the 8th and one in the 9th to send the game into extra innings. Andres Galarraga's sac fly in the 11th won the game for the Skulls. G.M. Ryan George was unavailable for comment after the game. A press confrence is schedueled for tomorrow to officially announce the deal.
