"I believe that right now, we are a significantly better team than we were earlier today." That was what, Brooklyn Manager, Ryan george had to say about todays blockbuster trades today. First they sent, potential star 3bman, Angel Sherid, lefty, Andy Benes and If'er Vance Law to Milwaukee for 3bman Matt Williams and John Wettland. As good as Williams is, the key acquisition in the trade for Brooklyn was John Wettland. The Skulls were in desperate need of relief pitching and they got one of the best in Wettland. Matt Williams gives them the power hitting infielder that they were looking for. Williams has 21hr's and 71 rbi this season. "It was hard to give up on those two, I saw a lot in Sherid and he will be very good very soon but We got two things that we needed now. As good as Sherid is he will never provide the power that Williams does. Wettland was that most important part in this deal. He gives us a quality setup man and I feel he will do a very good job setting up Randy (Myers)."
Upon hearing about the trade, Andy Benes had this to say, "It's tough but I'm going to have to deal with it. I really liked it here in New York but this is a business and being traded comes with the territory. I didn't really think that they were goimg to trade me, I just thought that they said it to make me pitch better."
The Skulls made another trade to replace Benes as they send, unhappy, LF'er Henry Rodruigez to Phoenix for Doug Drabek. Rodruigez is batting .287 with 15 hr's and 55 rbi while Drabek is 3-1 with a 3.31 era in 8 starts. Henry Rodruigez had this to say, "I'm glad they traded me, I hated it here. The fans are a bunch of morons and they should be locked up in a cage. I can start over in Phoenix where the fans are normal and will show me respect."Ê
Now to the game. Andy Benes, ironically, started for Brooklyn today and pitched 3.1 perfect innings before fracturing his ankle while covering 1st in a routine grounder. Jack Armstrong saved the game as he pitched 4.2 shutout innings and picked up his 4th win in relief. The Skulls' offense struggled again, only scoring 2 runs, but today 1 run would have ben enough as the Skulls win 2-0. Randy Myers picked up his 15th save, his era. is a, microscopic, .42 on the season.
Rumor has it that the Skulls aren't done trading yet. They still need a lead off hitter and they don't have enough confidence that either of their young LF'ers (Ruben Rivera and Shannon Stewart) is capable of starting. The Skulls are reportedly talking with about 4 teams and Doug Drabek could be headed out as quickly as he came in.
