The Skulls have been as hot as any team in the PVBL in the last few weeks and that continued this weekend as they won two games this weekend against Bellingham. The win was their 3rd strait and their 9th in their last 10 contests. The Skulls won the first game 4-3 with 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth but the win was not the most important aspect of the game. After watching his brothers 1st round draft pick, Frank Callahan, go 2-0, Ryan George decided to give his 1st found pick, Buddy Moisan, a chance to win the 5th spot in the rotation. Buddy admited that he was very nervous before the game, " I am as nervous as I've ever been in my life. I've gotten very little sleep this week and last night I couldn't go to sleep. I think it still hasn't hit me that after tonight I'm actually going to be a major leaguer." Moisan pitched 8 innings, he gave up 1 run on 4 hits and 5 K's. The 21 year old Moisan grew up in the one of the worst parts of Brooklyn but stayed out of trouble, worked hard and followed in the footsteps of his idol, Ron Darling, by graduating from Yale and pitching in the major leagues. The odd thing is that he might be taking over the spot in the rotation that his idol had. After the game Moisan had this to say, " Before that first pitch, I could barely move but after about the first inning, I settled in and realized that I was actually in the Major Leagues."
Now to the game itself. Doc Gooden pitched 7.1 brilliant innings for Bellingham but when Rick Helling came in in the 8th the Skulls were able to get on the board. Luiz Salazar's single in the 8th tied the score at 1 but Bellingham scored 2 in the 9th to take a 3-1 lead but they wouldn't hold that for long. Henry Rodruigez led off the inning with a ground out but Bernie Williams and Jeff Bagwell singled to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Andres Galarraga walked to load the bases and (pinch hitter) Angel Sherid singled in 2 runs. Carlos Baerga singled home Andres Galarraga to win the ball game. Scott Kamieniecki (1-0) got the win in relief. This is what G.M. Ryan George had to say, " Buddy showed a lot of poise out there today. He wasn't afraid to go after hitters and he seems like he is years beyond his age. We were very lucky to get him with the 10th pick in the draft. As of now he is our #5 starter for the rest of the year."
Brooklyn won 4-3 in 11 innings in the second game of the doubleheader. Noberto Martin had a pinch hit single in the bottom of the 11th to win the game. Alex Fernandez (8-2) pitched 10 strong innings, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits and 5 K's. Randy Myers pitched a scoreless 11th to get the win.
