About a week ago, things did not look good for the Skulls. They were starting to slump, Motor City had closed the gap to 1 game and they lost Alex Fernandez for a month. Since then, the Skulls have won 8 out of 10 and have a bit of breathing room in the divisional race with a 3.5 game lead over Motor City. The Skulls won again today, 9-8 over Tucson. There were some very good things out of this game.Mike Stanley hit his 15th home run Jeff Bagwell and Manny Ramirez each hit their 20th home run. Manny Ramirez is now second in the league with 65 rbi. The most important asp[ect of this game was the pitching of Ron Darling. Darling pitched 6 scoreless innings and since being put into the rotation he has been much better than anyone could have expected. After the game G.M. Ryan George said that he was pleased with the start, " When we acquired Ron, he was just a throw in in a trade. We didn't expect much out of him except mop-up duty and to help out with the younger pitchers. He was awful and I was very close to sending him down to AAA but he talked me out of it. He pitched so well in a few outings in relief that we felt confident in putting him in the rotation when we traded Osborne. Ever since he has been in the rotation he has been very good. When he got to the team his ERA was in the 20's and now it's down to 5. Overall I've been very pleased with what he has done."
The Skulls were unable to gain ground on Motor City as they continue to win. Denny Garcia gave up 7 runs in 1 inning and will most likely be sent to AAA soon. Randy Myers picked up his 9th save. Andy Benes will start tomorrow against Tuscon.
