After loosing 2 strait and falling into a 1st place tie with Bellingham, the Brooklyn Skulls won their most exciting game of the year against Detroit 3-1. The game was tied at 1 in the bottom of the ninth with 2 out, the Skulls had scored 1 run on 3 hits to this point, when Henery Rodriguez got on base. The next batter, Vance Law, signed with the team a few days ago to replace Andres Galarraga who is out for 4 weeks. Vance Law hit a bottom of the ninth, 2 out homerun to win the ball game. When interviewed after the game Law had this to say, " This is great, a week ago I was out of baseball and about to retire and next thing you know, I'm starting for one of the best teams in the league and I hit a game winning homerun. I'm having a lot of fun and I hope this lasts a long time." G.M. Ryan George had this to say, " I'm happy for Vance. He has played well for us since he has gotten here and has helped us win a ballgame. He realizes that his starting days with the ballclub are numbered but I think he has a very good chance to stay on the active roster once our (injured) players come back."
Lost in all of this was a brilliant pitching performance by Andy Benes. Benes went 8 innings and gave up 1 run but had a no decission and he said that games like this are tough, " It's hard to pitch this well and come out with a no-decission. Whenever you pitch a game like this you expect to win but I have to tip my cap to the other pitcher who may have pitched better than me. Baseball is a wierd sport, you can pitch your heart out and not win like I did today or you can pitch like crap and get the win, like I did 2 starts ago."
Jose Valentin just started a rehab assingment in Tampa and it seems as if everything is going as planned. He is expected to be back with the team in about a week. Manny Ramirez is also doing well, he took batting practice and ran for the first time since leaving the line-up with a sore knee, he will probably miss the next 2 games and then return to the line-up.
